Indian Student Assisitance Grant - Special Projects
Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter HEA 6.04(3) currently designates the Education Committee of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council to approve special projects funded under the Indian Student Assistance Grant. The Education Committee has not existed since the early 1980's. The American Indian Language and Culture Education Board advised HEAB on special projects until it was eliminated last fall with passage of the 1997-99 Biennial Budget.
Special projects are tuition reimbursement programs for part-time nontraditional Indian students. The programs are designed to meet the unique educational needs of the Indian communities. A designated portion of the Indian Student Assistance allocation was set aside annually for these projects. Special project funding was suspended when need increased for full-time students. It was understood this funding would be reinstated if funds became available. It is anticipated funds will be available to fund special projects under the Indian Student Assistance Grant for the 1998-99 academic year.
In the absence of a group to evaluate and recommend special projects, please consider the following:
Designate the Wisconsin Tribal Education Directors Association to assume responsibility for evaluating and recommending special projects to HEAB. The Wisconsin Tribal Education Directors Association was formed in 1992 or 1993. This group is comprised of 11 members, 1 from each federally recognized Wisconsin tribe. At least one member served on the American Indian Language and Culture Education Board.
